IDIOCRACY dvd review by Brian Roper

Most direct-to-video releases suck; here’s a notable exception I can’t recommend enough. Anti-intellectualism is the earmark of facism; so IDIOCRACY is very much a movie for our time. TV these days is such an inane, vapid cesspool; I can’t believe 20th Century Fox actually had anything to do with this, although it was  filmed in Austin, Texas.

The story is basically a updated and  more accurate version of Woody Allens’  SLEEPER (1973); an average Joe (Luke Wilson) from the Army is cryogenically frozen in an experiment that has its funding cut. His coffin-like storage unit winds up in a landfill, where it lays dormant. He awakens 500 years from now in an America that has inbred itself into a state of mass stupidity.

The number one movie is called ASS (and does not lie) The number one TV show is OW MY BALLS. Every square inch of everything is plastered with corporate logos.Good science-fiction should be something that could happen; I personally don’t think it’s going to take 500 years for Americans to get as moronic as they’re depicted here.

This was written and directed by Mike Judge who also did File23 favorite OFFICE SPACE and the Beavis and Butthead series. It’s truly scary to watch a future where everyone is as dumb as Beavis and Butthead, but we don’t have far to go so that alone makes this the most horrifying movie I’ve seen in years.

Rent this. Buy this. Force everyone you know to watch it.
